American Black Journal : There is the problem of young people bringing guns to school (esp. in response to death of student Chester Jackson, Jr. in a Detroit school). Because of this tragic event, assemblies were held in several schools to get staff/students/parents together in discussion about this problem & how to enforce safety & security. Questions raised were: What can parents do? How can they get more involved? The interviewees stress that they should talk to their children & prevent them from carrying weapons to school, and at the assembly they also had to sign the “Parent Commitment Pledge.” In addition, the school will get more involved in getting those parents and students who weren’t in attendance at the assemblies to help. Other questions raised in the discussion had to do with policies regarding students with weapons. Are sweeps and metal detectors constitutional? Should separate facilities be arranged for “problem students” who have had to be removed from their schools? Should any of these policies be changed? These were the overall issues of discussion.
